PORTLAND, Ore. – The captain of the Portland Spirit had his merchant mariner credential suspended after a close call on the Willamette River between the cruise ship and several teenagers in row boats.

The U.S. Coast Guard opened an investigation into the October 29, 2017 incident involving the Spirit’s captain, Lowell Gillespie Jr.  Based on their findings, a Coast Guard administrative law judge ordered Gillespie’s credentials be suspended for three months.

“The Captain as a licensed mariner should have know the rules of the road and should have allowed those vessels to pass,” Lt. Michael Tappan with the U.S. Coast Guard said.
